When multiple attempts are made on their lives, Nick is forced to turn to old enemies and new allies to solve a centuries-old crime before he and Kelly get added to the history books. Cross & Crown (Sidewinder 2) by Abigail Roux (Goodreads Author) really liked it 4. Trying to determine whether JD is friend or foe as they investigate the crime puts them on the trail of a much older mystery. To complicate matters further, JD forms an attachment to Nick that Nick struggles not to respond to as they search for the key to JD's identity. After Shock & Awe which I so loved and read many times - its a short one - Cross & Crown is a perfect continuation of Nick and Kellys new romance. The witness he's dubbed "JD" is being tailed by Julian Cross, a retired CIA hitman. The second installment of the Sidewinder series by Abigail Roux, the first being Shock & Awe, reviewed here. Then Nick's boyfriend and former Recon teammate, Kelly Abbott, joins him in Boston, and Nick finds his hands a little too full as the case and his personal life collide. But when he realizes his witness is suffering from amnesia and can't even remember his own name, Nick wishes he'd gone with his gut and put in for vacation time. When Nick O'Flaherty arrives at the scene of a double homicide to find he has a witness to the crime, he thinks it's his lucky day.

Dangers abound, especially with a predatory weasel on the prowl, and matters aren’t helped by the cold attitude of the other animals who call the farm home. Life outside the cage isn’t quite what she expected, though. This brush with death is almost the end, but the plucky bird manages to come through and is rewarded with her freedom. Enjoying the views of the outside world she can see from her position near the door, she dreams of freedom, and the opportunity arises when she is taken out for culling. Sun-Mi Hwang’s The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly (translated by Chi-Young Kim) is the story of Sprout, a hen trapped in a coop inside a farm shed. Luckily, though, I picked it up along with my most recent read at the university library, and it turned out to be most enjoyable – even if it took me less time to read it than to finish off this review □ However, there was one prominent book that, while not actively avoiding, I certainly wasn’t making much of an effort to track down, mainly because of a few dissenting voices among the positive reviews. My interest in Korean literature coincided with the release of a wave of books about five years ago now, including Dalkey Archive Press’ ambitious Library of Korean Literature selection, and I’ve since got around to trying the majority of those early offerings. An examination of that history may not provide final answers, but it does provide important clues. What appears almost certain is that the decisions to prosecute and ultimately convict Socrates had a lot to do with the turbulent history of Athens in the several years preceding his trial. Historians suspect that Plato and Xenophon, intent on showing their master in a favorable light, failed to present in their accounts the most damning evidence against Socrates. What could Socrates have said or done that prompted a jury of 500 Athenians to send him to his death just a few years before he would have died naturally?įinding an answer to the mystery of the trial of Socrates is complicated by the fact that the two surviving accounts of the defense (or apology) of Socrates both come from disciples of his, Plato and Xenophon. Why, in a society enjoying more freedom and democracy than any the world had ever seen, would a 70-year-old philosopher be put to death for what he was teaching? The puzzle is all the greater because Socrates had taught-without molestation-all of his adult life. The trial and execution of Socrates in Athens in 399 B.C.E.
